FAIL-PROOF BASIC WORDING

There are a myriad of ways that you can word your wedding invitations. What matters most is that it feels right to you and reflects your wedding day.

Below are just a few samples of basic wording. Ask yourself these questions to get started:

-- is your wedding casual or formal?

-- who is paying for the wedding? If your parents are, then they may wish to be listed as hosts on the invitation.

-- is your design intricate or simple? You may not have the space to be wordy.

If your wedding is a bit more relaxed and non-traditional, then you can be more informal. You can even drop your last names and add a few fun sentiments like "frivolity to follow", or "dancing and merriment to follow" instead of the traditional "reception to follow.

If your wedding is very formal, then you might want to use your middle names and never, ever abbreviate anything. Traditionally, the word "honor" as in, "the honor of your presence" signifies that you are getting married in a house of worship. But that has become a bit loose these days. Use "honor" if you are in the US and "honour" only if you are outside of the US.

Using the appropriate honorific on your envelopes shows that you put thought into your guest list. It also can make guests feel a bit special and will surely get them excited for your wedding. Mr. Warren Haggarty and Miss Elizabeth Davies would be an example. If your wedding is say, a clambake on the beach, then you might opt for the more casual Warren Haggarty and Elizabeth Davies.

By all means, spell out all words on your invitations and envelopes. Street, not St. and Michigan instead of MI.
